Matthew, a senior tailback at Volcano Vista High, ran for
153 yards, caught a 54-yard touchdown pass and returned
a kickoff 64 yards in a 35–22 win over Highland High.
During his junior year he set the New Mexico single-
game
rushing record (382) and went 35–0 as a wrestler, winning
the Class 4A state title in the 152-pound division.
Max, a senior at Indiana University High, won the road
race and criterium in the 17–18 division at the USA Cycling
Junior Road Nationals. Earlier this year he had three top
five finishes at the Cross-Country Junior Nationals ski
competition; he is one of 10 juniors selected by the U.S.
Ski Team to train at the National Elite Group Camp.
Cee, a sophomore at Villa Park High, won the under-17
girls’ singles title at the USA Badminton Junior National
Championships. She also won the U-17 doubles title, with partner Claudia Hardi, and the mixed doubles, with partner and cousin Phillip Chew. This is the fourth straight year Cee has swept all three events in her age group.
Kendall, a freshman at Detroit Country Day, won the youth division 400 meters at the AAU Junior Olympics (53.05), breaking the national record for 14-year-olds.
She also won the youth 100 and 200 races at the USA Youth Outdoor Track & Field Championships and the USA Track & Field National Junior Olympics.
Gunnar, a junior at Santa Fe High, won intermediate-division titles in the decathlon and the 400 hurdles (53.95 seconds) at the USA Track & Field National Junior Olympics. At the USA Youth Track & Field Championships, he won the decathlon, 110 hurdles (14.79) and high jump (6' 6 3/4").
Alexis, a junior at Archbishop McCarthy High, was
named outstanding female athlete at the USA Taekwondo
Junior Olympics after taking gold in the junior welterweight
class, winning three matches by a combined
49–9. She won bronze in the adult bantamweight class
at the USAT national championships.
Katharine, a junior at National Cathedral School, took first in the cadet (under 17) women’s épée and third in the junior (under 20) women’s épée at the summer nationals.
Earlier this year she won both divisions at the Junior Olympics. She is ranked first in the nation at the cadet level and seventh at the junior level.
Miguel, a junior at Stephen A. Douglas High, won
the 106-pound class at the USA Boxing national
championships with a 7–5 decision. Since then he
won his bout by decision in Team USA’s dual match
with Italy. Earlier this year he took the National
Golden Gloves title at 106 pounds.
Gareth, a senior at Los Alamos High, was the state Class 4A champion in the 800 meters (1:56.13), the 1,600 (4:12.60, a meet record) and the 3,200 (9:27.35).
In becoming the second 4A male athlete to sweep
the distance events at the state meet, he helped the Hilltoppers finish second in the team competition.
Ebony, a junior at Miami Southridge High, won the
400 meters at the Nike Outdoor Nationals with the
fastest time (52.07) in the nation by a high school
female this year. Earlier she won the Florida Class 4A
400 title (52.68) for the third consecutive time and
the 200 (24.06) for the second time in three years.
